adventures in geekdom

The blog of a twentysomething who is finally unleashing her inner geek after stifling it for the majority of her adolescence.

star wars/scott pilgrim

*EDIT: Yes, I know referred to Han Solo as “Hans.” IT’S BEEN A LONG WEEK, OKAY? xD

I finally watched Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and all of the critics who wrote up great reviews when it first opened in theaters were right: I’m definitely kicking myself for not having seen this movie in theaters when I had the chance. I’m sure it would’ve looked AMAZING on the big screen. Still, it was a wonderful movie that was so visually delicious I could’ve eaten it up. I’d heard that some people weren’t into the ending — that it wasn’t very realistic — but I thought both Scott and Ramona had learned what they needed (for example, “Scott has gained the power of SELF-RESPECT!”) in order to have a stable and successful relationship with each other. Sometimes endings can be sweet and realistic, though it’s usually a difficult feat to pull off in general. I honestly with more movies were made like this, because it had me within the first five minutes.

Oh, and I want the soundtrack. Really bad. iTunes account, Y U NO FULL OF MONEY??

Also, I have now seen both Episode IV: A New Hope and Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. So far I love R2-D2 more than everyone else, which usually happens to me while watching movies. For example, when watching The Boyfriend’s favorite movie, Alien, I honestly only cared if the cat made it out alive. No, Sigourney Weaver, I don’t care if you make it out alive. But that cat of yours had better survive or I will cut someone. I also may or may not continually laugh out loud at how constantly hilarious C-3PO and R2-D2’s friendship is.

Hans Han/Leia are absolutely killing me — it hurts so good. There’s multiple reasons why I love them more than Anakin/Padme, the main one being that the latter pairing drove me crazy with their sappy puppy-eyes and very awkward and staged interaction; at least, that’s how it came off to me. Sadly, their “relationship” was a big reason why I had trouble enjoying the prequel movies, however, I must take this opportunity to thank Ewan McGregor for making it all worth it. Ah well, I’m loving the original trilogy so far and I’m still glad I watched all of the movies in order.

College has started up again, and while procrastination is always fun I’m not going to try and stick to a posting schedule this semester. Just think of it as getting extra-long blog posts, instead of mini-updates. I wish those of you who are also back in school a successful semester/year/etc., and I hope those of you who are still on vacation or out of school altogether suffer miserably for your crimes are enjoying yourselves!

See you soon! :)

lego harry potter/pathfinder/pottermore

So, The Boyfriend and I have finally completed LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 for the Wii! Okay, uh, we’re actually at 97.5% completion but we think there may be a few glitches getting in the way of us finding the last Student in Peril and two golden bricks. One of these days I’ll do a full run-through of Hogwarts (since all of the regular and bonus levels are totally completed) and double-check that I didn’t miss anything. But otherwise we are finished! It was actually really fun going back through all of the levels, except the lake task during Year 4. That level has been and always will be a right pain in the ass!

In other news, The Boyfriend has been kind enough to set up a small Pathfinder campaign for me, so that I can get used to roleplaying and combat rules and such. I might possibly start joining him and his friends in their bimonthly roleplaying game, but I’m still unsure. Of course my inner geek is screaming to join in, but my girlfriend senses are wondering if that’s such a good idea. xD I’ll definitely keep you all posted! I might even post a copy of my character sheet if anyone is interested.

A brief review on Pottermore: I am EXTREMELY depressed that I was not sorted into my house of choice (and unlike others, I am NOT trading in my merch and taking the Sorting Hat’s word as the final one), bu otherwise the site has been tons of fun. It’s definitely not an MMORPG, but an illustrated (and animated!) read-along for the books. The amount of bonus content for just the first book (as well as the bonus content itself) is blowing my mind, and the site is absolutely gorgeous and easy to navigate. However, because this is beta testing, there are definitely some bugs (mostly contained to dueling and potions-making). The Pottermore team seems to be on it, though, which is good. :) Overall, I love it and think any Potter fan would love it as well. Keep your chin up if you haven’t received your Hogwarts letter welcome email yet — the amount of users being let into the site is being staggered, so it might be a long wait (though well worth it). And if you’re interested, head on over to the site and sign up to be notified when registration begins for the public!

See you all next time! :)

As mentioned before, I won’t be posting screen shots of anything, but I’m totally happy dancing over being in the very first group to get in!

extra life 2011

One of my favorite blogs, Zaxy, posted this and I wanted to help spread the word!

Britt, Kristina, and I are pleased to announce that we will be participating in Extra Life again this year!

Extra Life is a 24 hour video game marathon to raise money for children’s hospitals.

Check out more info here! It takes place on October 15th, and like last year, we’ll be on Ustream the whole time so you can check up on us. Take a look at the adventures that came of it last year. Highlights included special guests, a fire alarm, and a dancing penguin.

Want to join our team and help raise money for kids by gaming? Join here! If you’re not able to play along but can donate, you’re welcome to do so as well.

We can’t wait to do this again and we’re hoping to make it even bigger and more awesome than last year. Who knows, if we’re lucky we may have TWO fire alarms go off!

Let me know if you’re planning on participating! I’m definitely gonna round up some friends and see if they’re interested. :)

I could do without the Kinect, but….but look….look at the majesty….

So many more deliriously awesome pictures at Engadget.

Obviously old news now, but I still love this. IT’S SO SHINY!!
